Let’s be honest. If you’re visiting Hobart, you are most likely to be advised to check out MONA, the Royal Botanical Gardens, Saturday Salamanca Market, Port Arthur, Mt Wellington and tons of other sites, but chances are, you wouldn’t have heard about Alexandra Battery Park. But may we humbly suggest you to add this pit stop to your itinerary? Alexandra Battery Park has commanding views, an old fort complex with tunnels and store rooms, most still accessible, making it a great spot to take some panoramic photos and delve into history.
Alexandra Battery Park History
The Alexandra Battery Park was first constructed to defend Hobart in February 1885, as part of the triangle of fortresses, with Queen’s battery at the Apex, and two new batteries – Alexandra Battery and Kangaroo Bluff Battery. The Bluff Battery and Alexandra Battery were usually manned in turns on selected days from 9 am – 4 pm or used on annual training camps for drill purposes or shell practice.
Alexandra Battery was equipped with two 12 pound guns and two 32 pound guns on rails. Parts of Alexandra Battery is connected by cramped tunnels used for underground safe escape and connects to the main battery closer to the city via a series of underground tunnels. These tunnels are now closed off but Alexandra Battery is open to the public now as a park.
The park offers superb views of the River Derwent, north the Tasman Bridge and City, south to the South Arm and the estuary opening. It is also a popular gathering point for fans to watch the final stages of the annual Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, held over the New Year period.
So grab your camera, and head opposite 669 Sandy Bay Road (just behind Long Beach House), to indulge in a slice of Tasmanian history and to take in the scenery and click some lovely photos.
Long Beach is a short 7 minutes walk away. It is a popular little gem near Hobart CBD. It’s quiet with no noisy traffic. Easy walking, cafés, good seafood restaurant, children’s park and sports field – something for everyone – even a dog walking area. Hobart Twilight Market held at the beach is a popular Friday event enjoyed by locals and tourists alike.
